Political-social-ecological criticism and critique is relatively easy. Things really are not going well and the problems we have may overtake us in the not too distant future; and, it is all too sadly obvious. Even the Retrumplicans want to MAGA; that is, again; so America is not doing as well as they want it to do, whatever that is. And for what is called "The Progressive Left" in America, there are lacks from all kinds of social services, e.g. education and health care, and then over to too poor distribution of wealth creating too much poverty in the richest country on earth as well as amongst the poorest while 50 families control 1/2 the wealth of the world and 1/10% of 1% control a substantial portion of the wealth here, and furthermore the upcoming disastrous climate change, and then the Sixth Great Extinction, etc., etc. I need not go on and on for them.
The agenda of the anti-Democratic Party anti-Progressive Republicans is something dubbed "trickle down economics." That is, take away the burden on wealthy tax payers of taxes and they will invest their money in making more money by creating more companies or grow the companies they now own and voila, wealth will trickle down to everyone else. From Reagan to Trump, this has been their agenda. Actually, it had been their agenda before that, but Reagan had a way with words and they have stuck ever since to the media body politic like the economic leech theory it is. Ayn Rand, you are the winner.
They have other misplaced agendas as well, like keeping out what they see as evil criminal immigrants — who they have made into "criminals" by outlawing most immigration.
And then is Trump's favorite of unleashing coal and oil industries and, therefore and forthwith, Make American Greatly energy independent Again and our air is clean anyway and climate change is just a blip in the weather forecasting and I get the votes in West Virginia and Texas.
Oh yes, and if we cannot win elections far and square, we will change the voting laws so we can win without being fair and square.
In relation to reality, this agenda is not only foolish and delusional, but as in Trump's non-policy re. the pandemic, factually and actually dangerous. Problems are not only not solved, but send us all down the road to hell and the destruction of the USA of America. Ego illusions all. Ego foolishness brought Napoleon down in Moscow; the Athenians in Sicily; Cao Cao at the battle of Red Cliffs and Adolph Hitler at Stalingrad. Be careful of those who in delusion say they will make you great but lead you off the lemming cliff.
Yet, seeing the problems is one thing. Finding the solutions is entirely another. Moreover, how do we get this change even if we know what we want? Do we Progressively proceed by working from the top down or from the bottom up? Top down has been the strategy of the Democratic Party for a long time now. You can see it today in the solutions of the Biden administration. It is an agenda heading, to my mind, in the right direction, even if it is not getting their fast and furiously enough.
Fairly tax the wealthy. Fix the tattered USA infrastructure. Create jobs building climate friendly stuff. Let more immigrants in. More social service: free day care and community college. And, of course, vaccinate everyone. Make voting easier, not harder.
Yet, something does not work for Americans with all this. We are not Denmark and Norway, much as Bernie would like. There is instinctively and almost universally a distrust of centralized and patronizing power centered in the Washington federal government. Republicans exploit this distrust mercilessly, so that even when the government is doing the right thing, e.g. the CDC during the pandemic, it is difficult to get everyone to even wear a simple mask.
Distrust of centralized authority runs in both political directions and I assure you that there are those on The Left who may want the feds to do the right thing for social services and human rights and equality before the law, but who also are just as skeptical of federal power as The Right. Many would prefer an entirely bottom up revolution to take over.
Yet, how to proceed to get a better world order? Top down a la Bill and Hillary Clinton who love good corporations or Trumplicans who like the Right Corporations; or bottom up a la all of us?
I would suggest that it is not an either or choice. The top of the system needs change, democratic change. The bottom, which is all of us, needs to wake up and take over as well. So, we need to work both ends, abandoning neither and giving each its proper due. The essays contained within Citizen Phil's website, suggest solutions that draw, not only both ends as well as the middle of the political spectrum, but suggest a new balance of tops and bottoms.
And getting there will take working both ends, not one or the other. How to .... we all need to start thinking: how to .... A new political party or changing the existing ones? Local meetings and organizing? Yet one way or another, it needs to be both ends. The System as it exists is inadequate and getting a functional and good System is a ways a way and will take work.
Start sending in your ideas about: HOW TO .... And let's DO IT NOW.
So, let me start at the beginning for those within earshot. Do not abandon politics as it is. Yet, as important as it is to move forward and not hopelessly backwards within The System; it is even more crucial to set an agenda that is new, exciting and involves more citizens. How? Begin with discussion. That is, a Town Meeting not just in small towns, but regular meetings monthly in every Congressional district in the country and NOT lead by the Congressperson of that district or controlled by a political party. Not that the Congressperson or the local party members of that district could not attend the meeting, but a meeting simply of the citizens of the area to discuss an agenda for the country. Running the meeting and having its discussion be a civil discourse will be a task. Good luck. You will need it. What passes for civil discussion in the social media — which is where citizens gather now — is .... well, problematic.
What should be emphasized at these meetings are IDEAS. That is, IDEAS instead of the present empty at your throat present shouting. If we are going to come together as one great America we are going to necessarily listen to and discuss, not pontificate and gesticulate.
Eventually, there needs to be a rewriting of the Federal Constitution. It needs to be made much clearer, to my mind, the nature and value and extension of EQUAL HUMAN RIGHTS.
OK. That is a start, all the time, still and all, not neglecting what is happening under the existing inadequate only partially democratic, only partially human rights attentive System.
So what should you do tomorrow? Get together with your political — or friends who will be attracted to politics in the future but might be turned off to today's politics-as-is — and put together a Congressional district town meeting. I am not suggesting this will be easy or even that the first meeting will be more learning experience than productive. But the journey of a thousand voting miles, starts with, well, one foot step of gathering and discussion. Lots of details and angst but it is worth it.
At the same time, on a big scale, do what you can, even given your relative powerlessness. Try to get your ideas and ideals into the greater public discourse. On line. In the media. Get elected and spread it to the current body politic. Change the agenda of the existing political parties.
We have work to do and we need to do it quickly. Biden may be good. I can assure you, he is not enough. YOU be the change we need and convince your neighbors and friends of the same and together we can change it all!
